More than 10% of Young Adults in Australia are facing homelessness. SEMZ have forged a partnership with RMIT University to mentor, guide and enable 4th year Project Management students through an exciting project at St Kilda’s PCYC.

Why are we supporting the PCYC? St Kilda PCYC is an extraordinary self-funded charity that has been making a difference to disadvantaged youth since 1947. PCYC programs aim to reduce suicide rates, depression and crime amongst Melbourne’s youth.

The vision of St Kilda PCYC is to “Empower youth for life” giving young people an alternative to “hanging around the streets” providing low-cost recreational facilities and activities.

What we plan to do: In conjunction with RMIT and supported by The Salvation Army, we will guide and enable RMIT students through a project to transform a dis-used shed at the back of the PCYC St Kilda emergency accommodation rooming house into a communal hub.

The project aim is to give these disadvantaged young people access to a communal space that is comfortable and safe.

We’re dreaming big! Initial plans were to clear out the room, give it a coat of paint and a second-hand couch and coffee table but we want to assist RMIT students to give these young adults much more than that! We’re thinking; replacing external cladding and internal wall and floor lining, installing heating and cooling, a small kitchen, comfortable furniture with spaces to socialise and relax, a table tennis table and areas to read and study – a place they can feel proud of and enjoy.
Let’s achieve this together!
